James A. Bland (1854-1911) was given a gift of a second-hand banjo at the age of 12, and was performing professionally by the age of 14. He attended primary school in Washington, D.C. and graduated from Howard University in 1873. Over the period of his lifetime, Bland composed over 700 songs, among them "Carry me Back to Old Virginny," "Oh Dem Golden Slippers", and many others that have crossed racial lines to become part of America's rich musical heritage.
