ON HIS DAYS IN WEIMAR (MUSICIANS.) LISZT, FRANZ. Autograph Note Signed, "F. Liszt," to Anna Benfey-Schuppe, in German, written in the margin of her questionnaire to him, responding to questions about his musical life in Weimar between 1849 and 1850. 3 1/2 pages, folio; folds, even toning, minor scattered foxing, blue pencil lines and numerals in an unknown hand associating each question with appropriate response. ". . . The names of the greatest performers figure in the Court concerts, such as, Joachim, Ernst, Vieuxtemps, Bülow, Rubinstein, Bronsart, Tausig, Madame Viardot-Garcia, etc., etc. A few of these concerts were conducted by Berlioz . . . .
"During my direction of the Opera at Weimar, from '49 to '58, the following works were performed there, together with the standing repertoire of Mozart's, Weber's, Rossini's, Meyerbeer's operas, etc.
"February '49 Tannhauser, August 28th, '50, Lohengrin (first performance) . . . .
"You might obtain better and more detailed information concerning musical life at Weimar . . . from some who took part in it either as performers or friends, especially Gille, Lassen, Gottschalg, Grosse . . ., Wahlbrüll, Milde and his wife, and Frau Dr. Emilie Merian. . . ."
The present note was originally sent with a letter [not present] from Liszt to Mrs. Benfey-Schuppe announcing the enclosure and revealing that the questionnaire's responses were intended for her husband, who planned to publish a pamphlet entitled "Beethoven and Liszt." Both the letter and the present note are published in La Mara, Franz Liszt's Briefe, No. 268.
