first edition, a scarce and unusual narrative. Born in 1850 near Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, young Arter actually witnessed the hanging of four of John Brown's co-conspirators. When Emancipation came a few years later, his mother moved the family to Washington. Her new employer offered to educate Jared and his brother if they indentured themselves to him until they were 21. Arter eventually earned a PhD from Pennsylvania State College.
