(NATURAL HISTORY.) Forster, John Reinhold. A Catalogue of the Animals of North America. Frontispiece plate of a falcon. 43 pages. 8vo, later worn boards; later inscriptions (library markings?) partly erased from title page, offsetting to final two leaves. London, 1771

Additional Details

First edition. Forster had recently translated Peter Kalm's Travels into English, and had mentioned in his preface that he had compiled an imperfect catalogue of American animals. By popular demand, he published it here. It is a brief list of Latin and popular names, arranged by class, along with source of information; apparently no such catalogue had ever appeared in print before. 69 species of mammals are listed, 12 of them being new species not described by Catesby. Sabin 25133.
