Additional Details

The present group of original drawings served as models for several of the printed illustrations in George E. Waring and George W. Cable's "History and Present Condition of New Orleans, Louisiana" (Washington, D.C.: Department of the Interior, 1881). Our manuscript maps are larger in scale than their lithographed equivalents and the six include:

- Plan de la Nouvelle Orleans Capitale de la Louisiana 1728 (published at page 8/9)

- Plan et Projet de la Nouvelle Orleans, 1763 (page 12/13)

- Plan of New Orleans in 1770, by Capt. Pittman of the British Army (page 20/21)

- Plan Showing the Boundaries of the Great Conflagration of New Orleans on the 21st of March 1788 (page 24/25)

- New Orleans in 1798. In Accordance with an Ordinance of the Illustrious Ministry and Royal Charter (page 28/29

- Diagram Showing the Inundated District - Sauve's Crevasse May 3rd 1849 (page 52/53)

Limited details emerge concerning Baron Ludwig von Reizenstein's life and career, though it is known he spent a number of decades in New Orleans involved in the arts and sciences and he may be most notably known for his scandalous urban goth-mystery novel, his obsession with entomology, and the fact that he was cousin to military mapmaker Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Egloffstein. Reizenstein's drawings are largely copied from (or at least based on) earlier historical maps of New Orleans, but a competence of artistic draftsmanship shows through in each unique composition.
