Additional Details

The receipts are made out variously to Anthony Yelverton (1700-1784) or his sons Andrew or Gale Yelverton. Among the signers is Henry Livingston, Jr. (1748-1828), a Poughkeepsie surveyor who is sometimes credited as the real author of "The Night Before Christmas." In 1782, Livingston was paid 26 shillings from Gale Yelverton for surveying 120 acres in New Paltz. Some of the memoranda are interesting. On the first full page is a scrawled recipe which we hope we are reading incorrectly: "A receipt for cureing sore eys. Tak white doges turd and put it in stale winters butter milk two days and strane it and wosh upon eyes."
