Additional Details

Stephen A. Hurlbut (1815-1882) was a Major General in the Union Army during the Civil War, commanding the Department of the Gulf during the last year of the war. He went on to represent Illinois in Congress, and then went to Peru as ambassador in 1881. He was an outspoken advocate of Peru's interests in the War of the Pacific against Chile. He was scheduled to return to the United States on 6 April 1882, and the ladies of Lima signed this elaborate token of thanks as a parting gift. However, he suffered a heart attack and died ten days before his planned departure. with--an original cameo portrait of Hurlbut as a young man, and a possibly related daguerreotype of an unidentified family, March 1860.
