Additional Details

In 1546, a group of conquistadors led by Gonzalo Pizarro revolted against King Charles V, in reaction to a series of laws intended to protect indigenous laborers against abuse. Pedro de la Gasca (1485-1567), priest, diplomat and official of the Holy Inquisition, was sent to Peru to quell the rebellion. Gasca was given unlimited authority as acting Viceroy, but no troops or funds. Through diplomatic maneuvering and a makeshift army, he defeated Pizarro and restored order before returning to Spain in 1550.
The present copy of the Pedro de la Gasca appointment decree was made in the year after his departure from Peru. His mission was "to see to the discontent . . . and to assure peace and tranquility." This official copy is signed by members of the Council of the Indies and scribe Juan de Padilla.
