Additional Details

Jennie Van Der Zee (1885-1956), sister of the more famous photographer James Van Der Zee, married Ernest Toussaint Welcome in 1910, opened the Toussaint Conservatory of Art and Music, and became a photographer and filmmaker in her own right. After 1922, she practiced as a successful real estate broker in Jamaica, Queens, and in the 1940s launched a new Toussaint School of Art & Music there. A 16 July 1949 ad in the New York Age promised: "Not Just Art For Art's Sake! Make a Living By It! Mrs. Toussaint Welcome, first woman to attain national acclaim for her art helping the war effort, offers you this opportunity."
