Additional Details

The Piersons operated the important Ramapo Iron Works northwest of the city. This letter mixes business with politics, as Isaac reports on the latest news on the hung presidential election: "Nothing new has transpired since you left town, no president yet. The last acct from Washington says they have balloted 31 times, the result of each the same. This day's mail is not in at 2 o'clock." He later adds, "3 o'clock, the mail is in, no president." Interspersed with these anxious observations are comments on their business: "Have you sent up a petition respecting the road to the landing? . . . Taking in 9 tons of Pennsyl. iron which will be sent the first opty."
