THE FIRST PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATING CONVENTION (PRESIDENTS--1832 CAMPAIGN.) List of Delegates Attending the National Anti-Masonic Convention. Letterpress broadside, 18 x 4 1/2 inches; folds, one small hole in text area, minor foxing; docketed on verso. [Baltimore], 26 September 1831

Additional Details

The delegate list for the first presidential nominating convention in American history. The Anti-Masonic Party (a third party) met in Baltimore to nominate former attorney-general William Wirt as their presidential candidate. Among the delegates were prominent abolitionists Thaddeus Stevens and Henry Dana Ward. This list names more than 100 delegates, organized by state, and also gives the name of the Baltimore hotel where each is staying.
Nominating conventions were soon recognized as a more effective means of choosing a candidate than by Congressional caucus, and were soon adopted by the two major parties--but the Anti-Masonic party was first. Only one copy in OCLC.
