Additional Details

This composition was loosely adapted from Francis B. Carpenter's classic 1864 painting popularized by Alexander Hay Ritchie's engraving (see above). Several of the cabinet members have been moved, and Carpenter's original rendering of Lincoln has been replaced with a Brady portrait. It is much scarcer than the Ritchie engraving; we trace none others at auction since Swann's 23 May 1985 Lincoln sale, lot 157, which was in poor condition. Lincoln Image, pages 123-5. with--a toned and slightly cropped example of the original Carpenter-Ritchie lithograph, "The First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation before the Cabinet." 24 x 36 inches. [New York, 1866]
