Additional Details

The former governor of Idaho was killed by a bomb in 1905. The bomber named among his conspirators Big Bill Haywood, a leader of the radical Western Federation of Miners who had recently helped launch the International Workers of the World. Haywood, who had been in Colorado at the time of the bombing, was extradited to Idaho for trial. His attorney was Clarence Darrow. This same-day broadside announcing his 29 July 1907 acquittal was issued a Colorado newspaper friendly to mining interests: "Extra, Haywood Jury Stumbles on Question of Reasonable Doubt and Acquits Haywood." Also included is the full 2 August 1907 newspaper, with a longer account of the trial taken from the Denver Republican.
