Additional Details

the first edition of any part of the bible in the galibi [black carib] language. The "Black Caribs," or Garifuna, numbered at least 30,000 in the lowlands of Central America, from Honduras to Nicaragua. They were descendants of the original Caribs of the island of St. Vincents who, by the end of the eighteenth century, had become mixed with the slaves imported there from Africa. "Mr. Henderson . . . is the first and only individual who has attempted to place before this people the Word of God in their own vernacular language." (Bagster, the Bible in Every land, London, 1852.) According to Darlow and Moule, 2394 (Historical Catalogue of Printed Editions of Holy Scripture), a small edition of this little gospel was printed at the expense of "the church of Edinburgh under the care of Mr. Christopher Anderson." Scarce. OCLC locates two copies; there are, in addition, copies at NLS and Lilly.
