Additional Details

A rare poster for the historic appearance of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad at Washington's Uline Arena in 1959. Elijah Muhammad (born Elijah Robert Poole; October 7, 1897 - February 25, 1975), was the founder of the current Nation of Islam. He was a mentor to both Malcolm X and Louis Farrakhan the current leader of the Nation of Islam. At the time of this appearance, there were 50 Temples in 22 states. As the country moved into the modern civil rights era, many young black men looked for a stronger, more radical message, and fund it in the voice of Elijah Muhammad. Many were moved to drop their "slave-names," and instead chose "X" names, like Malcolm's.
