Additional Details

The "James Condie" left New York on 29 November 1874 laden with oil and plaster of Paris. She was grossly overloaded and eventually had to jettison a goodly portion of her cargo around the Cape of Good Hope. The ship grounded off a small island in the East Indies and was basically a loss. As the ship and the cargo belonged to the ship's master, it was a tragedy. As his wife's fortune furnished the ship and cargo it was an even greater loss. Added to this problem was a mutinous crew and a son nearly consumed by illness. The log itself is an interesting survivor - a note on the front pastedown says that it survived shipwreck, train wreck, and house fire. Accompanied by an article written by the son who survived and published in the September 1940 issue of "The Lookout."
