Additional Details

This poem was written to commemorate the historic date of 13 May 1888, when Isabel, Princess Imperial of Brazil, signed the "Golden Law" abolishing slavery in the last country where it was practiced. It was written by a lieutenant of the National Guard, who in his cover letter "wishes to express to Your Highness the great satisfaction that seized his spirit by the decree of 13 May that redeemed millions of Brazilians from captivity" (in translation).
