Document Signed by John Dixon of Morristown, NJ, deeding "a certain negro boy named Harry about eight years and one month old . . . as a slave" to Shubal Pitney of Mendham, NJ. One page, 13 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches, with docketing on verso; partly cut and folded for display to 9 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches, moderate toning and dampstaining. Np, 1 May 1797

Additional Details

The buyer Shubael or Shubal Pitney (1767-1847) was raised on the large family farm in Mendham, which remained in the Pitney family through 2009 and is now an historic landmark. One slave remained in his household as late as the 1840 census. Provenance: found in a frame with late 20th century address labels of Mrs. Clarence McMurtry of Morristown, NJ.
