A legal lien, signed by Cheswill as Justice of the Peace of Rockingham County. Wentworth Cheswill, (sometimes spelled Chesswell 1746-1817) African-American coroner, assessor, and justice of the peace. In the Spring 1776, just preceding the outbreak of the Revolution, Wentworth Cheswill was elected town messenger by the citizens of Newmarket, New Hampshire. As such, he was entrusted with carrying news to and from Exeter. When word came of the arrival of British warships, Paul Revere rode to Portsmouth and Cheswill rode to Exeter to sound the alert and receive instruction from the Committee there. A very uncommon signature.
