Additional Details

An enslaved woman named Mary is here emancipated from the estate of her father and owner. "Whereas Edward Ratcliff . . . did in his lifetime and shortly before his death request that his representatives should at the expense of his estate purchase and set free from servitude or in some other manner procure to be emancipated Mary a female slave . . . supposed to be the daughter of the said Edward Ratcliff deceased." The estate administrator paid £55 to an heir to "carry into effect the benevolent intention of the said Edward Ratcliff" to "fully and absolutely emancipate and forever discharge from slavery and servitude the said Mary."
