(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) Composite photograph of the signers of the 13th Amendment, which banned slavery. Composite oval albumen photograph, 19 1/4 x 16 1/2 inches oval, on slightly larger oval mount, credited in negative; scattered surface loss in lower left affecting three portraits, minor toning and soiling. Depicts the congressmen who voted in favor of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, as well as Lincoln and Hamlin. Lacks the accompanying key, "Anti-Slavery Constitutional Amendment Picture." Provenance: consigned by descendants of John Martin Broomall (1816-1894), who served in Congress as a representative from Pennsylvania's 7th District during this period. He was an active abolitionist and signed the 13th Amendment; he can be seen in the midst of the upper left quadrant, just behind and to the left of his friend and colleague Thaddeus Stevens (see lot below).
