(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) DOUGLASS, FREDERICK. Carte-de-visite photograph of the great statesman, orator and writer. Classic 'CDV' pose, signed on the reverse in ink: "frederick douglass, marshall of the dist. of columbia." Boston: Warren, circa 1881

Additional Details

a fine, crisp sepia-toned image of douglass as he appeared in 1881. The note in ink on the reverse looks like it might be Douglass' hand. Frederick Douglass was the most photographed black or white man of the 19th century, with more known images even than Lincoln. Pictured in Stauffer, Trodd and Bernier's catalogue raisonné 'Picturing Frederick Douglass,' #96, on page 189. Douglass' sitting for Warren in Boston was perfectly timed to be available when his third autobiography 'Life and Times of Frederick Douglass' was released. In fact, this image is the frontispiece for that book.
