Additional Details

first edition, hard cover issue of the author's rare first book, a commercially published version of his doctoral dissertation at Harvard. W. E. B. Du Bois (1868-1963) took great pains to transform over three hundred pages of rather dry historical facts into readable and understandable prose. His study went considerable farther than any previous attempt to examine the trade, and is divided into three distinct sections: 199 pages of the actual history, beginning with the Colonial period and taking the reader through the end of the Civil War. There follow four "appendices, chronicling legislation, etc, in chronological sequence.
