Aaron Lopez (1731-1782), merchant and philanthropist, was also one the most notorious slave dealers in colonial America. By the early 1770''s, Lopez was considered to be the wealthiest merchant in America, but the onset of the Revolution saw an abrupt reversal to his fortunes. The present document represents a lawsuit, originally brought against Jacob Wilbore in 1774, at the height of Lopez''s success, and re-addressed in 1777. The court ordered that Wilbore pay Lopez "Plantation merchant" the sum of thirteen pounds, fifteen shillings and ten pence plus damages. It is clear from the wording of the document, however, that Wilbore was not to be found. A note from the sheriff on the reverse indicates that a summons was left at "his last usual place of abode."
