Additional Details

This court-ordered auction took place near Cross Plains in Robertson County, TN, near the central Kentucky border. On offer were "18 or 20 likely Negroes . . . consisting of Men, Women, Boys, and Girls," belonging to the estate of John Hutcheson. In addition, Hutcheson's land would be put up for auction, but only if still necessary to pay the estate's debts after the enslaved people were sold. A strikingly printed auction broadside printed during the twilight of the institution. None others traced in OCLC. Charles Hamilton offered one at auction in 1966, possibly this example.
