Additional Details

This oration was delivered the year after Tubman's death, at the unveiling of a plaque in her honor in Auburn, NY on 12 June 1914. It was originally published in the local newspaper, but this is the first and only separate printing. The Rev. Mason was an administrator at Livingston College in North Carolina. A short bio of Mason is tipped to the verso of the first page, describing him as a "gifted son of Africa." The last two pages contain a short history of the Harriet Tubman Home for Aged and Indigent Colored Persons in Auburn, written by its superintendent E.U.A. Brooks. Facing the final page is tipped in a printed photograph of mourners at Tubman's grave. 4 examples in OCLC, and none traced at auction since a Swann sale, 28 February 2005, lot 411.
