Additional Details

A work suggesting the confinement of slavery east of the Blue Ridge mountains and its gradual abolition in those states. Ruffner''s pamphlet came at a crucial point in the mid-nineteenth century politics of slavery and state''s rights. This pamphlet, known as the "Ruffner pamphlet" caused a sensation when it first appeared. West Virginia eventually separated from Virginia when it seceded from the Union in 1861. A second edition was published in Louisville the same year. Haynes 16178; LCP 9008; Howes, R496; Sabin 73922.
