A very detailed letter from a slave dealer to his partner: "Mermon Burgeon, Jacob Persons, Wilson and Jack Grimes, George Duff (and) James Lanwood at $800 each, John Adams at $1300, Aggy Beekly at $850, and the Smith negros (sic), eight in number at $6100 . . . the best sales I ever made . . . but there is some four or five that will be a loss on. No one will look at them now . . . but they will all sell . . . send as many as possible and as quick as possible . . . I will be nearly sold out again . . . the house now collected full of people and no more time . . . a great gathering here to buy, some sales certain . . . Go ahead and purchase as fast and as many as possible . . . " The writer goes on effusively. The matter-of-fact tone is truly chilling.
