CONFEDERATE SLAVE HIRE (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) We Promise to Pay to James B. Hamden. . . Partially printed document, accomplished by hand; 6 1/2x7 1/2 inches, printed on blue paper. Petersburg, January 2nd, 1865

Additional Details

A promissory note from the state of Virginia for the hire of a Negro Slave named Henrietta, and her son David. Henrietta and her son are being hired from their owner for a year for the sum of two hundred and fifty dollars. What is unusual about this otherwise common document is that the Civil War was all but over when Henrietta and David were being hired for a period of a year. Dated January 2nd 1865, the Confederacy was one month away from Sherman''s march and three months away from surrender.
