Additional Details

The front free end-paper is filled with ink references to special cases, including "Coloured marriages ' which unto itself might simply have been something on the legality thereof. But the entry is far more complex than that. For example: "Question: Can a free white man marry a free black or coloured woman? Can a white woman lawfully marry a free black or coloured man? Instances of the first sort have occurred; no instance of the second is known. It is important that the public mind be turned to this subject." This sort of dialogue continues for 13 pages citing all sorts of cases etc. It is quite amazing that so much time was devoted to the subject, clearly suggesting that such unions were not uncommon.
