first edition of this famous catechism. Only this edition was used for the religious instruction of slaves. While OCLC locates 12 copies of this work, all but two are in Southern libraries, with none in the East. Chambliss served as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Prattville, Alabama from1840 to 1842, where he advocated the oral instruction of slaves. This practice was apparently accepted by many of the inhabitants of Montgomery and other counties. The nearby Old Harmony Baptist Church in Autoga County had a mixed congregation that included slaves in the 1840s.
