Additional Details

The writer tells of a neighbor who had "been foolish enough to tell his black boy that when he died he would set him free . . . The boy seemed to think his master had lived long enough . . . he put nearly a gill of oil of vitriol into the coffee pot . . ." The plot was foiled because the coffee smelled bad. The slave was flogged and was scheduled to be hanged. The date of this letter is established by the mention of the death of John Quincy Adams.
