Additional Details

Appointment of George M. McKinney as "a leader of a Patrol detachment for three months and the ballance [sic] of this year . . to visit all negro quarters at least once a weeke [sic] and offener [sic] if necessary." In the decade preceding the Civil War there was increasing fear of some form of a slave revolt in the South. It became customary for white civilians to travel armed, and for regular searches to be made of the quarters of slaves.
