First document is for the sale of "a Negro boy named Prince," being sold by Catherine Beekman to John Lawrence. The second document involves the sale of another "Negro Boy" named Sam, by Daniel Riker to David Purdy. The third document is a legal certification stating that a slave named "Nann" was under 45 years of age and was capable of supporting herself. Issued pursuant an Act passed in March 1817 which forbade the manumission of any slave under 45 unable to care for themselves, thus releasing the state from the need of supporting them.
