Additional Details

The Constitution of the Republic of Texas was ratified in September 1836, and drew heavily upon the United States Constitution for its language. When this edition of the United States Constitution was published, Sam Houston was in his first term as president of Texas. Later, as Governor of Texas, he refused to lead the state into the Confederacy on constitutional grounds, stating "In the name of the Constitution of Texas, I refuse to take this oath." Sabin 16106.
