A RARE POSTER (UPLIFT POSTER.) Heroes of the Colored Race. Chromolithograph poster, 19x26 1/2 inches, which originally showed large oval portraits of Hiram Revels, Blanche Bruce and Frederick Douglass with various vignettes in the background showing slavery times and emancipation. Over the portrait of Douglass, someone has affixed an oval albumen photograph of a black minister, the Rev. L.G. Lewis, who appears to have signed his name beneath the image. There are some cracks and surface damage to the poster; with a portion of the top edge trimmed off. sold as is. Philadephia: J. Hoover, 1881

Additional Details

OCLC locates only the Library of Congress copy of this poster. Though damaged, we thought that the superimposition of the portrait of Reverend Lewis upon that of Frederick Douglass brought this into a completely different category, almost in the realm of folk-art.
