Additional Details

Highgate, in Vermont's northwestern corner, was chartered in 1763. In 1805, a tax was levied on the original proprietors, with property to be sold to make up the difference for those unable to pay. This volume lists 64 proprietors and the disposition of each one's property: tax paid and/or land sold, with details on the purchasers. Heman Allen, a nephew of Ethan Allen, seems to have acquired quite a bit of property in this way. Also included are manuscript copies of the official notices by collector John Johnson and town clerk Matthew Sax.
