Additional Details

D.S. Stanley. Report on the Yellowstone Expedition of 1873. 17 pages, disbound, with original detached blue printed wrappers (quite worn); library gift bookplate on inner wrapper. This survey expedition was undertaken by parts of 6 regiments including the 7th Cavalry under Colonel Custer's command. Much of page 6 is devoted to an account of Custer's running battles with a large party of Lakota Sioux--his first taste of combat with the Lakota. The report also cites a bit of Mormon folk wisdom: "Anything will grow where the sage grows, provided the ground can be irrigated" (page 11).
James W. Forsyth and F.D. Grant. Report of an Expedition up the Yellowstone River Made in 1875. Folding map and 5 plates. 17 pages, disbound with moderate wear, original printed wrappers mounted on modern endpapers, map with separations at folds.
