Although he is primarily remembered for his World War I images, Karpellus was also involved in commercial advertising. His style was most often very graphic, using flat colors (see Swann Modernist Poster Auction #2062, lot 96). However, clearly reminded of his studies at the Academie Julian, here he employs something akin to French, Post-Impressionism, using an engaging pointillist technique to depict a young woman hanging up her laundry.
