ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968) HARPER'S BAZAAR. Group of 10 covers. 1937-1939.
Condition varies, generally B+. Paper.
Each approximately 13x10 inches.
When Alexei Brodovitch became art director at Harper's Bazaar, one of his first decisions was to hire Cassandre. From 1936 until the war, Cassandre designed a total of 42 different covers. No longer in his geometric Art Deco phase, which lent itself to his posters of trains and ships, Cassandre shifted focus to the world of fashion, inventing a symbolic language based on Surrealism. In his images of eyes, mysterious landscapes and symbols of travel, one can sense his wish to leave the world of graphic design and focus more on painting.
