ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968)

ITALIA. 1936.

39¾x24¾ inches, 101x62¾ cm. Coen & Co., Milan.
Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and minor overpainting in margins and image and along unobtrusive vertical and horizontal folds; repaired pin holes in corners.

One of two images Cassandre produced for the ENIT (Italian Railway) during a summer's stay in Italy with his assistant Raymond Savignac in 1935. The other image depicted "the sports" or leisure activities available to tourists of Italy, while in this poster the focus is on art, history and religion. In a style far more suggestive and surrealistic than his Machine Age images of trains and ocean liners, Cassandre depicts the Madonna and Child and Roman ruins with faint mountains visible in the background. As a French artist working in Mussolini's Italy, Cassandre used a monogram instead of his signature to protect his identity.

Mouron 61, Manifesta 1, Cassandre / Weill 172, MoMA 434.1976.
