ALBERT STERNER U.S. NAVY / OVER THERE. 1917.
563/4x373/4 inches. American Lithographic Co., New York.
Condition B+: replaced paper, restored losses and repaired tears in margins; vertical and horizontal folds; creases in image.
In 1917 George M. Cohan composed the song that more than any other would become the anthem for the First World War; Over There. Using the song's title, Sterner depicts a somber, strong image of Columbia, sword in hand, beneath the billowing stars and stripes and a sky filled with curls of smoke emanating from the ships of the Navy. She is pointing a sailor to the distant shores of Europe. Rawls p. 80, Theofiles 49, Navy 2.
