"Dubbed the Mardi Gras of the North by National Geographic magazine in 1919, the Dartmouth Winter Carnival is the oldest collegiate winter festival in the United States. Founded in 1910 by members of the Dartmouth Outing Club who wanted to promote the then-fledgling pastime of recreational skiing, the inaugural event attracted participants from nearby colleges, who trekked to Hanover, New Hampshire, to challenge Dartmouth students and snowshoeing events" (Crouse p. 120).

This is the version without the additional text. Dartmouth p. 41, Crouse p. 120.
