Beardsley scholar Linda Zatlin notes "this miniature devil with a fishing rod arises from Beardsley's study of the flourishes of seventeenth-century calligraphers. The devils in James Ensor's `Hop-Frog's Revenge,' an etching of 1898, closely resemble this one"--Zatlin 734 (Aubrey Beardsley, A Catalogue Raisonné. New Haven: Yale Univ. Press, 2016).
