AUGUSTE RODIN
Vieillard suppliant, version à genoux.

Bronze, circa 1886 (cast later). 146 mm; 5 3/4 inches (height, excluding marble base). With the artist's signature, on the side of the base.

Another version of Vieillard suppliant (see Grappe 158; Normand-Romain [2007] S. 523), with the bearded man seated upright reaching overhead, was cast posthumously for the Musée Rodin in 1974 by the Emile Godard Foundry, Paris.

The current work was conceived by Rodin (1840-1917) as part of the monumental bronze Gates of Hell, circa 1885-1895.
