BEATO, FELICE (1832-1909); HERING, HENRY (printer)
A remarkable 4-part panorama of Odin Bay, China on June 21, 1860, with a military encampment in the foreground and clipper ships in the background. From the series of photographs made by Beato while accompanying the British Expeditionary Forces to China at the time of the Second Opium War. Unmounted albumen prints, each panel measures approximately 9 1/2x11 1/4 inches (24.1x28.6 cm.), overall size 9 1/2x45 inches (24.1x114.3 cm.). 1860; printed 1862

Additional Details

Originally in the Collection of Bhupendra Karia (1936-1994); by descent to the present owner.

This image is reproduced as a double-page spread in Felice Beato, A Photographer on the Eastern Road, 97. According to the Getty Museum, "Beato was able to record the French and British forces regrouping on their way up the coast from Hong Kong to Peking (present-day Beijing). The widespread encampment of the troops nearly fills the four-part panorama and seems to threaten the small local village on the far right."
