BEN NICHOLSON
Siena (Large Version).

Etching and drypoint on wove paper, 1965. 321x280 mm; 12 3/4x11 inches, full margins. Signed, dated and numbered 16/50 in pencil, lower margin. Printed by François Lafranca, Locarno, Switzerland, with the blind stamp lower left. A very good impression.

Nicholson's (1894-1982) collaboration with Lafranca produced over 80 experimental etchings based on Nicholson's travels around the Mediterranean. Nicholson felt a special connection to Siena, Italy. In 1963, he stated that he sensed "in a previous life I must have laid two or three stones in Siena Cathedral." The cathedral's iconic striped marble columns are portrayed in the present work. Lafranca 22.
