Ben Shahn (1898-1969) was born in Lithuania and relocated to Brooklyn, New York, with his family when he was eight years old. His artistic career began steeped in a formal academic training, but Shahn ultimately chose to branch out stylistically and incorporate his longstanding passion for social justice into his work. In addition to painting and printmaking, Shahn was a photographer and a muralist. First and foremost a social realist, Shahn depicted the harsh realities of war, poverty, immigration and the working conditions.
