BENNY ANDREWS (1930 - 2006)
Seated Figure.

Mixed medium and collage on wove paper, 1960. 480x315 mm; 19x12 3/8 inches. Signed and dated in ink, lower right.

Provenance: Ex-collection Forum Gallery, New York, with their ink stamp on the frame back; private Massachusetts collection.

This is a very early example of the painted collage that has characterized much of his work on paper; his first solo exhibition at Forum Gallery was two years later in 1962. The artist was one of ten children in a sharecropper's family, born and raised in Madison, Georgia. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago with funds from the GI Bill after military service from 1950-53. He moved to New York in 1958 and soon befriended artists Red Grooms, Bob Thompson, Lester Johnson, Mimi Gross and Raphael Soyer. The recently deceased artist exhibited nationally and internationally for over forty years, and his work is in such museum permanent collections as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Hirshhorn Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Detroit Institute of Arts.
