CHARLES ALSTON (1907 - 1977)
Untitled.

Oil on masonite, 1960. 184x392 mm; 7 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches. Signed and dated in oil, upper left.

Provenance: Ex-collection the artist; Bill Hodges Gallery, New York; Robert Henry Adams Gallery, Chicago, with the labels on the painting back; private Michigan collection.

Alston painted both figuratively and abstractly through the late 1950s and early 1960s. He "considered the black and white abstractions in a retrospective shown in 1968 to be amongst his most important he had done." A founding member of the Spiral Group in 1964, he made less abstract works into the 1960s. Romare Bearden and Harry B. Henderson, Jr., A History of African-American Artists, p. 269.
